Tottenham goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman has undergone surgery after suffering a knee injury, the club has confirmed.

Whiteman, who has made just one senior appearances for Spurs, tore his meniscus and will be out of action for several weeks.

In a statement, Tottenham confirmed the 22-year-old will not return to training until May.

That suggests the injury is minor compared to certain knee injuries – players are often out for months if they suffer cartilage damage.

Still, knee surgery is serious and Spurs will have to oversee Whiteman’s rehabilitation carefully.

Whiteman is effectively Tottenham’s third-choice goalkeeper after Paulo Gazzaniga left the club for Spanish club Elche on loan in the January transfer window.

It is perhaps surprising that Whiteman is still at the club given that there doesn’t appear to be any kind of path to the first-team for him.

For now, it’s important for Jose Mourinho to have a goalkeeper like Whiteman in reserve in case anything happens to Hugo Lloris or Joe Hart.

But it’s unlikely both senior goalkeepers will be absent at the same time between now and the end of the season.

Spurs could then move for a new second or third-choice goalkeeper in the summer, which would put Whiteman’s future in doubt.
