Tottenham have denied reports suggesting there is a ‘sack clause’ in Nuno Espirito Santo’s contract, according to The Athletic.
Nuno signed a two-year deal to become Spurs’ new head coach in the summer after a long and drawn out search for a new manager.
But if a story from The Athletic’s David Ornstein is to be believed, the Londoners could be on the hunt again next summer.
That’s because it is understood Tottenham included a clause in Nuno’s contract that means they will be able to sack the former Wolves boss without paying compensation if he fails to secure a top-six finish this season.
The clause is seen as a win-win situation for Spurs as it means they will either qualify for Europe under Nuno, or they will be able to somewhat easily switch coaches next summer if things don’t go to plan.
However, the report notes that Tottenham have told The Athletic there is no truth to the clause claim.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the clause is make-believe – Spurs may simply be trying to protect their head coach – but the club’s denial shouldn’t be discounted.
In any case, the fact Nuno was only given a two-year deal suggests he is a short-term appointment.
