Steven Bergwijn is not part of Antonio Conte’s plans, with the Italian saying just “two words” to the winger in his first two weeks as Tottenham boss, according to Dutch journalist Mike Verweij.
The 24-year-old was named on the bench for Sunday’s postponed Premier League game at Burnley, but hasn’t played a minute under Conte.
Bergwijn was an unused substitute for the games with Vitesse, Everton and Leeds before missing the embarrassing defeat in Mura through illness.
His last minutes came when he replaced Lucas Moura against Manchester United as part of the controversial substitute that proved the final straw for Nuno Espirito Santo last month.
And Verweij said that the Tottenham manager simply doesn’t rate him and revealed that a return to Holland could be on the cards, with Ajax interested in his services.
Bergwijn has scored just one goal in 44 appearances across all competitions since the start of last season and only four in 60 outings in a Spurs shirt altogether.
“Conte doesn’t see it in him at all,” Verweij said on Kick Off podcast. “Conte is also the one who thwarted Bergwijn’s transfer from from PSV to Italy. Inter were interested at the time but Conte didn’t need him.
“Conte has only said two words to Bergwijn in two weeks at Tottenham Hotspur. That is why Ajax consider him, but first Ajax will have to sell Neres.”
What a load of bollocks, believe that and you will believe anything.
Some Reporters are as bad as our players were at Mura last week: says it all.
If we have any ambition then we need a proper playmaker in the position filled by bergwijn or lucas. They might occasionally dazzle fans with something but their passing is so sloppy and it’s impossible to balance out a front four with either of them next to son and kane, unless we had a suarez/messi level 10 in the centre and a de bruyne behind that.
We need someone like szoboszlai or nkunku.
It will always be completely mental to me that we killed deles position in the team, by electing to play lucas/bergwijn over replacing eriksen. The minute eriksen switched off, our average playing zone dropped back about half of a pitch, combine that with the loss of dembele/sissoko or anything resembling steel in midfield and voila, our defence is as bad as our attack.
Football IQ and accurate passing trumps pace and sloppy passing every day of the week.
