Tottenham look to have missed out on the signing of Porto star Luis Diaz, with Liverpool now set to sign the forward, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.

Earlier this week, we relayed word from Football London claiming Spurs had made a move for Diaz, who has scored 16 goals across all competitions for Porto so far this season.

But it seems the Londoners will now have to pursue other targets, and they have one of their Premier League rivals to blame.

Ornstein, who is always reliable when it comes to transfers, says Liverpool have made a late swoop for Diaz and a €60 million deal looks likely to go through.

It is believed Liverpool were initially interested in buying Diaz this coming summer, but Tottenham’s pursuit provoked them to act early and secure the 25-year-old now.

It’s a blow for Spurs, particularly with just days until the transfer window closes, but perhaps this means they can now spend more money on players in other priority positions.

Only time will tell whether the club is willing to go big in the final days of January – we think it’s unlikely, but let’s see.

  1. I have supported Spurs for nearly 80 years and I believe we are just a business not football. Until you get new owners or a better chairman nothing will change.

    • Correct that is what spurs now are. A business first and formost. One trophy since 08 says it all and the largest debt of any premiership club. Its no longer to dare is to do.

  2. I can only see mass anger at this. What a farce this window has been. I think all of us that’ve been following spurs transfers a long time knew that Diaz wasnt coming when we bid ridiculously low, ridiculously late in the window. Combine that with the fact we couldnt even get a deal with Adama f’ing Traore over the line and this window has been a statement about where we are as a club now. Conte and Paratici havent changed how we operate as people had hoped.

I personally believe we as a club are in the hangover period of hitchens disasterous reign as head of recruitment. What has angered me all season is the fact that hitchen is still at the club. When poch got spurs to the champions league final and pleaded with the club for reinforcements, hitchen gave him ndombele 58m+ bonuses (plus 60m in wages), lo celso 60m+ (40m loan fee+over20m fee), jack clarke 10m and sessegnon 30m, 160m for -4 players who are either halfway out the door or who havent earned a place in the team 3 years later. Hitchen then orchestrated Jose’s disasterous hiring. Lets not forget that Hitchen went against bidding 30 or 40m for ziyech (who had a hand in 3 goals against us in that semi final and was on a promise he could leave ajax that summer), in order to pay 60m for lo celso, who was nowhere near the same player at the time or anytime since. Add that to 42m for sanchez, 25m for lucas, 30m for bergwijn, 15m for rodon etc etc etc.

We are now a joke of a club making lowball offers and getting hijacked n the final days of transfer windows.

  3. No surprise in Spurs missing out on Díaz as was always going to be the case; Levy knows perfectly well that he would not come to us; had our offer been accepted and the player prepared to join us, Levy would have had a heart attack…..and he would have actively sought a way out.
