The Tottenham Hotspur stadium regularly hosts NFL games, but how much do the Spurs players know about the sport of American football?
That’s the question Betway posed on the eve of the Super Bowl between the Cincinnati Bengals and the LA Rams. When the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was built, it included facilities such as dedicated American football locker rooms and a retractable pitch, to attract the interest of the NFL. A ten-year deal was signed that would guarantee that at least two NFL games would be played at the stadium, each season.
The action kicked off in 2019 with a game between the Oakland Raiders and the Chicago Bears, followed by the Carolina Panthers against the Tampa Bay Bucaneers. There were no games in 2020, due to the Covid pandemic, but the NFL returned to Tottenham in October 2021, when the Atlanta Falcons took on the New York Jets and the Jacksonville Jaguars met the Miami Dolphins.
Two more NFL games will be played in Tottenham in 2022, with those fixtures to be announced later this year. The ambition for the club is to be the natural choice to play host to any permanent NFL franchise that might come to London in the future. There are major worldwide expansion plans afoot in the NFL, with games also being hosted in Germany this year.
So has the arrival of the NFL in N17 piqued the interest of the stars of the Spurs squad? Betway teamed up with Tottenham players to put this to the test.
Four Spurs squad members were picked to be quizzed on their American football knowledge. There was no point in Harry Kane being one of those players, as his love for the sport is well-known, with the England captain having spoken out about his dreams of one day becoming an NFL kicker.
Instead, Lucas Moura, Ben Davies, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Sergio Reguilon were selected. Moura and Davies were together in one team, with Hojbjerg and Reguilon forming the other.
The two teams were tasked with a three-round challenge. In the first they would have to act out NFL teams names in a game of charades. Then they were tested on their knowledge of NFL jargon, before finally they were asked to place NFL teams on a map of the USA.
