As the January transfer window headed towards its climax, it seemed as if Spurs would complete a clean sweep of sales and loans of the fringe players at the club. Jermaine Jenas and Carlo Cudicini had departed on permanent deals to QPR and LA Galaxy respectively and there were a number of temporary transfers, including the deal that took Heurelho Gomes to Hoffenheim.

However, there was one man who remained at the club despite interest from elsewhere. For the last week of the window, it seemed as if David Bentley would be leaving White Hart Lane for a return to his former club Blackburn Rovers but the transfer – permanent or otherwise – failed to materialise.

Perhaps the fact that new manager Simon Appleton had only been in the job since the 11th of January might have had a bearing on the outcome but after taking a look at his squad, Appleton has confirmed that he wants to bring Bentley in on loan.

The player may not have relished a move to the Championship but there could be an attraction to his former club and if the loan is successful, perhaps David will be off the White Hart Lane books this summer.
