With the exception of January 2011, Spurs have often thrown up a surprise at the fag end of a transfer window but it’s doubtful as to whether any Tottenham fans would have woken up this morning expecting Louis Saha to be wearing a Lilywhite shirt at the end of the day.

The chain of events seems to have sparked off by Rangers’ acceptance of Everton’s bid for Nikica Jelavic which left Saha, who was already struggling at Goodison, surplus to requirements. The deal may be a loan or it may be permanent: In addition, it may or may not involve either Steven Pienaar or Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Elsewhere, it seems that there is still a possibility that Spurs may go in for Wigan’s Hugo Rodallega and Chairman Dave Whelan is bracing himself for bids from somewhere.

“We’re used to Tottenham making a last-minute bid on transfer deadline. We’ve not received a bid but that doesn’t mean they won’t make one. If they do they always leave it late, very late.”

But it’s Saha who seems to be firmly in the frame. At 33 he was actually quite prolific at Fulham where he scored around a goal every other game. At Manchester United and Everton however, that has dropped to approximately 1 in 3.

The answer may seem obvious but it’s worth asking just to see the reaction – is Louis Saha the striker we need?

Yesterday we looked at the possibility of new arrivals at White Hart Lane and the general consensus was that we were due for a quiet day. Later in the evening, reports suggested that Vedran Corluka was a target for Bayer Leverkusen and they seem to be gaining momentum this morning.

At the start of the month, Harry said that the Croatian would definitely not be leaving but after omitting him from the cup games where much of the fringe side appear, it may well be that Charlie is on his way.

Elsewhere, after suggestions that Gio dos Santos’ move to Spain would be completed by last weekend, the Mexican remains at the club while the talk has gone a little quiet.

Finally, QPR continue to be linked with Heurelho Gomes and Roman Pavlyuchenko in the wake of what the Daily Mail calls a ‘training ground bust up’ involving the Russian striker.

The departure of any player would leave Spurs a little thin with regards to cover but with these four barely featuring this season, they are unlikely to be desperately missed.

When asked about possible transfers before tomorrow’s deadline day, Spurs manager Harry Redknapp was typically vague,

“I can’t see an awful lot happening,” Harry said.

“I will probably watch a game on Sunday but not with a real eye on anyone, although I’m not going to tell you which match.”

Those are the sort of comments we’ve come to expect and a year ago we probably would have dismissed them completely. However, as we all know, nothing happened on deadline day 2011 other than an aborted move for Charlie Adam so can we look forward to another barren day?

Reports today have linked the club with Andy Carroll and a bid of £10m that the story refers to as ‘cheeky’. That would seem unlikely for a number of reasons but the other link is with Norwich City’s Steve Morison.

The former Northampton and Stevenage man has taken to life in the Premiership reasonably well with nine goals in 23 games for the Canaries thus far. That would lead some pundits to suggest that he could be even more prolific at another club while some Spurs fans may see him as the next Grzegorz Rasiak.

Another story links the club to Brazilian under 20 captain Bruno Uvini who is a 20 year old central defender playing for Sao Paulo.

Overall, is Harry bluffing or is tomorrow going to be another quiet day at Spurs Lodge?

The name of West Ham keeper Rob Green has been mentioned once again in connection with a move to Spurs and there will be a large section of Tottenham fans who are hoping to pin this one down to lazy journalism.

Green, who is now 32, is out of contract at the end of the season and reports that the Hammers have postponed contract talks until the summer seem to have sparked off these rumours.

The keeper has been pivotal to the club’s campaign but the inference in some quarters is that he wants Premiership football. For some Tottenham fans that could be a dilemma – having West Ham promoted or seeing them stay in the Championship while welcoming Rob Green into the club.

Reports have been coming through today that a permanent deal for Giovani dos Santos could be tied up before the weekend. There has been much speculation about Gio’s future since the transfer window opened and according to Villareal’s vice-president Jose Manuel Llaneza, Gio’s White Hart Lane misery could soon be at and end.

“The negotiations are well on the way and it seems like the player wants to come to Villarreal,” said Llaneza.

“The deal is not finalised, but we expect a solution by the weekend. Villarreal needs more attacking players.”

Without a loan deal, Dos Santos has been seen in a Lilywhite shirt a little more this season but his performances have done little to change the manager’s mind, amidst suggestions that he needed to get fitter and work harder in training.

Gio could conceivably have played in Friday’s FA Cup tie against Watford but by the time the game kicks off, the talented but frustrating Mexican may well have left the Lane for good.

Dipping into the SPL for transfer targets is always a gamble and while a player’s record may look good north of the border, moving into the premiership will always represent a tougher challenge. If you need any evidence of that, you could always contrast Gordon Durie’s scoring ratio after he’d moved from White Hart Lane to Ibrox.

Therefore, any approach for Rangers’ Nikica Jelavic would have to be seen as a ‘punt’ but could there be some mileage in pursuing the 26 year old Croatian? The striker averages around a goal every one and a half games and while Championship side West Ham have reportedly made a bid, some EPL sides including Liverpool are thought to be interested.

Meanwhile, Celtic’s James Forrest has appeared in these pages before and anyone who was watched Scottish football can tell that there is something special about the winger. That may have led to a price tag of £10m that in itself could put Spurs off, although Harry is currently denying any firm approach.

“He’s a good player but we’ve not made any bids,” Harry said. “If we did, I would speak to Neil Lennon. He’s a player we’ve had watched but he belongs to Celtic.

“At the moment, we’re not in the market to really do anything. We’re looking at a few options but nothing definite.”

Those comments may back up what most of us suspect: There will be no new faces at the Lane this season but could the Old Firm duo of Jelavic and Forrest do a job here?

The transfer rumours involving Spurs are very slowly starting to spark into life with stories that Roman Pavlyuchenko could be the first and possibly only departure from White Hart Lane this summer.

Yesterday, Pav’s vocal agent Oleg Artemov claimed that Spurs had extended the Russian’s contract until June 2013.

“Tottenham, headed by Mr Levy had the option of extending his contract, and they have done so,” Artemov told Russian website championat.ru.

“They informed UEFA, FIFA and the English FA that they have extended the contract by a year. This happened about two or three months ago, so this is already quite old news.”

While Artemov was oddly quiet about a possible January move, Pav’s name was one of many that was being touted around Europe, according to PSG boss Carlo Ancelotti,

Stories also suggest that Pav may have been offered to Newcastle and Sunderland and while the Magpies have added to their front line with Papiss Demba Cisse, the Black Cats are set to lose alleged striker Nicklas Bendtner with a broken nose and facial injuries and could yet end the Russian’s White Hart Lane career.

The name of Mauro Zarate has featured before in these pages but stories are gathering momentum today over a proposed loan move for the striker who is already playing on loan at Inter after failing to nail down a regular slot at parent club Lazio.

The player’s agent is certainly talking up the possibility of a move this month.

“There is a lot of interest in Mauro,” said Barry McIntosh.

“Spurs are among the clubs interested in bringing him back to England. He made a positive impact at Birmingham previously and his reputation has continued to grow.”

That positive impact at Birmingham consisted of four goals in fourteen games back in 2008 but even that is better than his career record overall. Admittedly, he has played some games on the wing but throughout his career he averages around one goal every four games.

The report goes on to suggest that the stumbling block may be Zarate’s £120,000 a week wages and some Spurs fans may be forgiven for hoping that this fact alone could scupper the deal.

The name Mateo Kovacic has appeared in the rumour columns for a few months now but there is an indication from the Croatian’s club that Spurs are keen to tie up a deal for his services.

Kovacic is just 17 and currently playing as an attacking midfielder for Dinamo Zagreb. Having broken into the first team in 2010 at the age of sixteen, he has gone on to establish himself as a regular starter and one of the hottest young properties in Europe.

The player himself has hinted that he would like a move away, but only after one more year at Zagreb,

“I’m still young and in no hurry,” said Kovacic. “I believe that it would be good for me if I would stay at Dinamo for one more year and then go out from Croatia.”

However, the club themselves have suggested that a deal could be struck in this window.

“The transfer window is quiet at our club at the moment,” said Dynamo’s Director of Sport Zoran Mamic.

“But nobody knows what the next few days will bring to us.

“The fact is that Manchester City and Tottenham are interested in Mateo Kovacic and they want to buy him right now.

“But even if we would say yes and the deal would go through, he would stay with us until the end of the season.”

It may not be the stellar signing that some fans are looking for but Kovacic would certainly be a worthy addition to the crop of young talent that Spurs have been bringing in to the club.

It looks like it could be a race between Sebastien Bassong and Giovani Dos Santos to be the first through the White Hart Lane exit door this month with our defender being the first dissenting voice of this transfer window.

Bassong could have gone to Bolton as part of a Gary Cahill deal in the summer but a more likely destination could be QPR, who have been linked with most of the fringe defenders in the Premiership.

I will not deny that I am indeed looking for more playing time,” Bassong said this week.

“Personally, I think this is the best championship. The Premier League might be my first choice.

“I’m close to nothing,” he added. “I just want to find playing time.

“All proposals are good to study and I do not pretend to close the door to anyone. “

It’s the Daily Mirror that claims QPR to be in pole position at present but while Mark Hughes has been linked with Chris Samba, Alex, Wayne Bridge and others, could Seb be short of options if Rangers don’t come calling?
