We have three players called up for England and every one of them picks up some sort of injury. It’s enough to make you think that internationals should be banned.
Yet with every cloud, we are reliably informed that there is a silver lining. It seems that it’s not just England players that get injured in internationals. Germany’s Per Mertesacker fractured the curve of his eyebrow last night and as a result, the Werder Bremen defender will miss the opening Champions League game against Tottenham.
Bremen also have Naldo injured, so who will line up alongside Simon Kjaer at the heart of their defence next week? Well it looks like it will be someone that we’re all familiar with. The former Arsenal catastrophe Mikael Silvestre was signed by Bremen just before the transfer deadline and due to their injury crisis, looks likely to make his debut for them this weekend against Bayern Munich.
I didn’t think it was possible to be more excited about this match, but now I am.
Simon Kjaer signed for wolfsburg, me lad.No one in their defence now, except f0r Fritz, Prodl and Andersen.
It’ll be interesting to see how Simon Kjaer plays as he was supposedly one of the many names linked with us over the summer.

For some reason I completely had Bremen/Wolfsburg merged in my mind – I was even thinking that Steve McClaren had signed Silvestre.
Play the flat-track-bully while he’s still in the mood in front of Modric, VdV and Lennon. Huddlestone and Palacios holding, with Bale, King, Gallas and Corluka behind them.
Just read about the injury to Mertsacker on Fourfourtwo.com which describes it as a “boost” for us.
Don’t feel comfortable with the idea that an injury to another player is reason for us to celebrate, and it’s good to see that none of thed replies on this site is of that mindset
Spurs will face Silvestre 100%.
Merteascker is doubtful and Naldo hasn’t played a single match this season, he is still nursing the injury.
Silvestre has played 17 times against Spurs and managed to grab 11 wins off it. He was defeated only 3 matches off those 17.
Werder are without Pizarro as well but that’s not of concern to Schaaf. Werder will be too strong for tottenham to break.
van der Vaart will be the man to watch because when he was in Bundesliga, he scored his most goals against Werder.
