Transfer rumours switch from midfielders to goalkeepers again today as the papers continue the hunt for the man to replace Heurelho Gomes.
If the error prone Brazilian does leave the club this Winter, there is a good opportunity for a young keeper to step in and develop behind Brad Friedel for a couple of seasons before taking over as number one and Spurs will hope that this situation could entice some top European talent.
Roberto Jiménez Gago or Roberto for short seems to fit the bill as a 25 year old Spanish keeper with international experience up to under 21 level. Jimenez is currently at Real Zaragoza but has found himself on the bench for much of this season.
There are downsides to Jimenez with issues over injuries and a string of clubs including Atletico Madrid, Gimnastic, Benfica, Zaragoza and Recreativo but he impressed at Benfica in particular and it’s felt that he’s now ready to make the step up and settle down.
At present, Spurs have the option to wait until Friedel calls it a day and then try to bring in a top name keeper at that point or they can bring in a player such as Jimenez right now and let them develop. Above all it promises to be an interesting winter of transfer deals at the Lane.
Sorry, but Roberto did not impress at Benfica and Benfica fans were not sorry to see the back of him and actually laughed at how much Zaragosa actually paid for him. I am from a Portuguese background and was brought up as a Benfica fan (as well as Spurs, seeing as I was born in Tottenham) and I have followed Benfica from as early as I can remember and I can say quite confidently say that Roberto is one of the worst goalkeepers I have ever seen! He is absolutely appalling and cost Benfica so many points last season. There were many goals scored that went through his legs, his hands or from dropping crosses or from not coming out to claim crosses. This would be a step in the wrong direction.
I have seen him play twice and both times he had a shocker, he makes gomes looklike schmeichel!
There’s a strange arrangement regarding his ownership where the bank own his registration & not the club. If leverkusen are going to sell Adler we should try for him
