The logical choice as England’s next captain took the armband last night as Scott Parker became the latest in a long line of Spurs players to captain their country. Scott made his usual solid contribution and although inexplicably overlooked as TV man of the match in favour of Daniel Sturridge, he looks to be the prime candidate to lead England through Euro 2012.

“It was pretty special, really, a very proud moment for me and something as a kid I dreamed of many a time. I could probably speak for every boy and every young lad who has the same ambition,” Scott said after the game.

“I never thought it would happen to me, so absolutely delighted to lead out my country. It’s definitely up there, not only in my career but obviously in my personal life, probably behind the birth of my kids. My family are very proud.”

Asked if he would like to keep the armband through the Euros, Parker added,

“Of course I would.

“It’s going to be difficult for me but I would obviously relish the chance to lead the country out again and take it into the Euros.”

Of course, a change of manager may alter the position but despite last night’s defeat, Scott is in possession and looks set to be in charge on the pitch in Poland and the Ukraine this summer.
