Reports emerging in the last 24 hours suggest that Spurs are about to make an approach for the 28 year old Ivory Coast striker Arouna Kone. The player is currently out of contract at Seville and despite a decent season with Levante, the player’s parent club have dispensed with his services and he is now a free agent.

Kone is a much travelled player which can sometimes set alarm bells ringing but in his 7 clubs (including loan deals) he is somewhere between a goal every three and a goal every two games. At present he also has 35 full caps for the Ivory Coast in which he has found the net nine times.

Maybe this isn’t the prolific striker we would all want but as free agents go there will be a lot worse looking for a club this summer. On the other hand of course, it could all be paper talk…

    • Exactly!

Were not trying to be a mid-table team anymore, we need to aim a bit higher than this, so its a no for me!

      Next!

    • ‘typical Harry signing, no ambition’. I’m sorry, but wtf are you talking about? Firstly I think anyone with a modicum of football knowledge knows that Redknapp is not responsible for signings at spurs, it’s levy. Secondly, regarding spurs signings being unambitious, what is it in the recent signings of sandro, van der vaart, parker and Adebeyor that struck you as being unambitious? Are you mistaking spurs for Aston villa by any chance?

      • VDV and Sandro were nothing to do with harry!! he got parker because he was cheap. and nelson and Saha were harrys signingd. Ade is on loan so yeah i stick by what i said no ambition! he always says we have money to spend and we always buy players that are past it! if he is just saying we have money to keep us happy i would rather know the truth then atleast his signings wouldn’t look so bad!!

        • im sorry Paul but you are so mis-guided in your answer. These signings are Harrys signings. They are typical of what he has done all through his management career at what ever club he has managed. Signing players from ONLY the premier league whi are either PAST IT, PAST THERE BEST DAYS, OUT OF CONTRACT, or NOT IN THERE PARENTS CLUBS PLANS and are CHEAP. Harry does lack ambition just as much as tactical knowledge. His knowledge of foriegn leagues is terrible. Remember his ‘who is ganso’ comment. The players who were already at the club when Harry arrived are the core reason spurs have done what they have done but the facts are that we haven’t got the long term players in positions we have needed since Redknapp has been in charge! An if you look barring sandro and vdv as they were levy signings and taking kaboul/defoe out as they came back to spurs as pompey couldn’t afford the payments. But most of harrys signings have either been sold, out on loan or don’t get in the team. Frediel and parker the only exceptions. Ade on loan was not ambitious. AND if we DON’T get a CHAMPIONS league place we would of had a worse season than Liverpool! We would both be in the europa league, yet at least liverpool would have won a cup and been to another final..and look what happened to there manager who showed a lack of ambition!

      • Paul,

I would like to point out, that any signings coming into Spurs over the period Harry has come in (with the exception of Sandro and VDV) are all Harry signings – when ppl say Harry signings they mean players HE HAS IDENTIFIED for us to sign!! B’cos of him we got rid of the DoF role, so he tells Levy what players he wants and Levy signs them ON HARRY’S SAY SO!

As I write this, Chelsea have just won the CL, confining us to the Europa League!!! Now think back to Harry’s moments this season – losing 13pt lead in 3rd! can’t even beat probably one of the worst teams this season in Aston Villa (sorry villa fans) – 8 mins from the end when we needed 3 pts and drawing, he brings on a DM in Parker and leaves Defoe on the bench – a more ambitious boss would have gone for the win – it wouldn’t have mattered if we’d lost the point as the next game we win we stay 4th anyway! Now, hoping for Bayern to do us a favour now we finished fourth for no reason. Modric will wanna leave even more now, coupled with Bale as well. Not to mention all these players that won’t sign for us ‘cos we ain’t inthe CL, not to mention the lack of funds to make decent signnings. Harry’s failure to concentrate on the job at hand for the people paying his wages due to the England job has Fu<ked us up – funny how we started winning as soon as Hodgson got the job! Harry is a man that cares purely for himself and him commenting on Modric and our other players about their futures – why can't he just echo what his chairman is saying, for Pete's sake! Now those words will come back to haunt him, as he has no Mgr's job for his country to escape to now has to focus on Spurs only – i think that guy was counting his eggs before they'd hatched!!! his first few interviews after Capello was sacked was as if he'd already got the job! I don't think he will get another contract – it would not surprise me if he is out of a job in the summer! In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if he left, and Modders signned his contract!! Modric gave an interview stating it has nothing to do with money why he wants to leave – it is ambition – and maybe it might have something to do with the coaches at WHL he thinks cannot take us any higher!

Aplogies for taking this out on you Paul, but your comments got me wound up – these Harry lovers really don't know much about football and what is required to move from mid table to permanent top 4 – championships – I'm not saying i do, but would you see fergie or Dalglish when he won leagues in the '80's and '90's with blackburn talk the way Harry does!

        • deflated. it hasn’t sunk in yet. we really needed to be in champions league i believe. this will hurt for a while, not being in the elite now for 2 years. as much as i wished we could maintain elite status that is great, but now… one year drop out, fine, but big clubs need to stay top 4 at worst.

  1. To be fair its not a typical Harry signing at all. he prefers players he knows and/or that are prem proven like Parker, Brad, Ade, Saha and Nelsen.

I agree that this doesnt look like an ambitious signing – may as well keep Defoe.

If it happened (highly unlikely in my opinion) you would be tempted to think that it was driven by finance (free transfer in, bank money from sale of Defoe) rather than improving the team.

As Harry has already said he wants us to invest and improve it seems pretty illogical.

  2. Defoe will go, ade will go back to city to be sold and saga will not be given a new contract. On a free it’s a decent signing as 3rd choice and on lower wages also.

    • if adebayor is not retained, there is no way Defoe will be looked to leave. spurs is well run club that uses relatively modest resources (compared to city, Utd, arse, Chelsea and pool) to the absolsute max. There’s no way 2 esablished strikers will be allowed to leave. Pav went at Xmas, Saha will not be retained, so Defoe will be going nowhere.

  3. Those of you who know anything about football would know that this player is decent and for a free agent on not too high wages we should snap him up! Most spurs fans are naive ! We cannot afford to buy stellar players or pay stellar wages so we need to find bargains! This guy is no worse than Defoe so I say bag him up

    • You are an idiot.

I could point out that spurs finished above 3 of the 5 teams you reference, 2 of the 3 for 3 consecutive seasons. But what’s the point? If you took notice of facts you wouldn’t post such drivel in the first place

I’m sure you’d prefer it if instead we went out and spent 24m on a complete failure like Lukaku. Makes for much bigger headlines.

      • Paul after reading two of your comments I’d say your Harry Redknapps love child. There are players around that we could afford and have the wage structure to pay them. Decent strikers like Huntelaar, Giroud, Soldado, Luuk de Jong, Murkovic. Its just our manager choose’s to only buy from the PL pool which limits us. This is because his knowledge of foriegn leagues is poor and he hasn’t installed a decent scouting network at spurs since he arrived. For the record them down the road signed Podolski for about 12m on 75k a week. That is within our budget.

        • Harry goes for the experience that IS proven in the PL. We have bought players in the past, Rebrov, Pav etc that do not get on with the pace of our game. Poldoski may not prove to be the player he has been in the PL so 12m may be wasted. Don’t forget they bought Gervinho, Ashavin and Chamakh all for big money that have failed so their record is no better than ours. Vertonghen and Kone for 10m would be good business. Keep Defoe coz he is happy now he got in England Squad so he knows that his bit parts are getting noticed still.

        • It is, but players like Podolski don’t come to Spurs in the prime of their career. We usually have to raise them.

  4. I’ve seen him play on the left wing a lot for ivory coast and he’s very quick and effective. I think this could be a useful free signing as he could be back up on the wings and up front. Sign him up!

  5. Bag him on a free, give Saha a one year deal (two back up strikers), get ady!!! and bring in a top notch striker like Huntleer or Llorennte, and sell Defoe!!!.

  6. Everyone seems to be pre occupied with bringing in a striker. what good will it do with Y K the only resistance we have. as much as goals win matches. goals against lose matches & demoralise a team . start fom the back and stiffen our backbone. with a solid defence & a top class midfield(Sandro,Parker,Livermore,VdV,Modric ,Lennon & Bale)
    even Defoe will score

  7. Why has Newcastle been so good this season, because they got cheaper strikers with potential. Kone would be a very nice signing. All you fans who are saying it’s a harry signing and if we do get Kone and he has a great season you all would be drooling for him.

  8. He’s as fast as f&&&, has the touch of drunken rapist, but has the odd explosive stacked under his shirt..some great finishes , displays of awesome pace, but then struggles to trap a 2 yard pass (intro ade). On a free I’d take a second look..

    re Rednapp – he couldn’t spot a bull in a pen, he’s f***** useless!!

  9. Just a rumor hopefully he isn’t a great player and if we do sign him Levy will think we made enough signings and he wont aim for the top of the tree e.g – remy (he is a bit of a liability due to his heart condition) so maybe damaio

  10. Let’s face it it wouldn’t be the worst signing, all this talk of lack of ambition is bollocks, this signing would be as a replacement should we need one as it seems we will not be getting ade and Defoe may leave. In terms of ambition have you not heard of the players we have tried to sign, Llorente, Rossi and are apparently close to signing Remy (if Chelsea loose). All teams challenging at the top of the table need strength in depth and having a player who can score 15 goals a season would be good enough for the small games

  11. Kone is a terrible player.
He was the Akinbiye of Sevilla a truly appalling player who scored once in 40 matches in Spain. Z-list at best!

  12. NOPE.

Sevilla aren’t the biggest club, but if they are dispensing with him this easily then that should be a red flag.

There are far greater options already at the club in senior players and those coming through the ranks.

This is where Levy needs to step in and say “Fuck no!” use what you have, and that means those he has sent to the hinterlands.

Also, bring in a better defensive coach. Bond was a very average player in his days, and nothing we’ve seen this season has shown us he’s doing a bang-up job. Offer Ledley a player coach position, and bring in a proper defensive coach.

  13. Yes!!!!!. Arsenal fan here guys.

Bayern just scored so hope this continues!!! Spurs deserve it more than Chelski..

  14. Can you believe it. BM go one up. All over Chelski. Droga wonder goal admittedly. Then Robbin misses pen. Then a german team loses on pens. Oh dear – wait for the Arsenal onslot. Lets just be gracious and patient

  15. CHAMPIONS LEAGUE? YOU’RE ‘AVIN A LAFF!

LAMPARD GO SMACK YOUR UNCLE ARRY’S OLD TWITCHING FACE!!!!

  20. I would like to invite all true Spurs fans to join me in congratulating Chelsea on the magnificent win in the Champions League final last night.

I know that you may not feel like taking up my offer just now, but give a few moments in which to think about the situation.

Firstly, by taking “your” place in next season’s competition they have spared you the humiliation of a probable elimination in the qualifying round (do you truly doubt that this would have been the case).

Secondly by gaining entry to the Europa League, not only will you be competing on level terms with the other minor European clubs but you will have the pleasure of watching your progress (if any) Thursday nights on Channel 5.

Furthermore, the loss of income by your failure to achieve Champions League football will ensure that Old ‘Arry will be able to continue with his policy of buying aging rejects from other clubs (Gallas, Nelsen and Saha spring to mind), this will inevitably lead to a downward spiral in your league position and so eventually to the sacking of the man who was never ever going to be England manager.

Can I point you in the direction of a little ditty that might cheer you up?

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you’re chewing on life’s gristle
    Don’t grumble, give a whistle
And this’ll help things turn out for the best…

And…always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the light side of life…

    If life seems jolly rotten
    There’s something you’ve forgotten
And that’s to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you’re feeling in the dumps
    Don’t be silly chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle – that’s the thing.

And…always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the light side of life…

    For life is quite absurd
    And death’s the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin – give the audience a grin
Enjoy it – it’s your last chance anyhow.

So always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath

    Life’s a piece of shit
    When you look at it
    Life’s a laugh and death’s a joke, it’s true.
    You’ll see it’s all a show
Keep ’em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

And always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the right side of life…
    (Come on guys, cheer up!)
Always look on the bright side of life…
Always look on the bright side of life…
(Worse things happen at sea, you know.)
Always look on the bright side of life…
(I mean – what have you got to lose?)
(You know, you come from nothing – you’re going back to nothing.
    What have you lost? Nothing!)
Always look on the right side of life…

There! Now don’t you feel better for that?

C’mon all you spuds, join in now! One, two, three…
