Harry said a lot of things yesterday – about his contract and about Roy Hodgson’s England selections but in amongst all the comments there was the clearest indication yet that Steven Pienaar will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

The South African international returned to Goodison Park in January and looked like a different player. He confessed he was sad to leave at the end of the season and it would seem beneficial for all concerned if something were to be agreed.

‘I would think in all honestly he’s going to want to stay at Everton. He seems to have produced his best form there. He was unlucky at Tottenham,’ Harry said.

‘He’s a good player, a very very good player. It’s just I had Gareth Bale playing on the left-hand side and you can’t dislodge Gareth Bale. He’s one of the best left-sided players in the world, without a shadow of a doubt.’

‘If he’s going to want to stay at Everton and Everton want him then obviously the deal is going to have to be right for Tottenham, otherwise he comes back to Tottenham.’

Striking that deal might be the only issue but maybe it’s better to cut our losses and move on – but not necessarily at any price.
