In amongst all the good news at White Hart Lane in the last week, there is still considerable uncertainty over Rafael van der Vaart’s future. Rumours surrounding the Dutchman began before the Euros as German side Schalke 04 looked to be considering a bid but Rafa’s wage demands seem to have ruled that deal out.
“If we had really wanted to have him then we would have got him,” Schalke’s ClemensTonnies said. “But it didn’t make any sense because we were miles apart. The topic is over.”
General manager, Horst Heldt, also said: “Van der Vaart has very high quality but despite this, he does not fit our requirements on a number of levels.”
That might seem to indicate that a move was being officially discussed and as such, it might suggest that the door is open for VDV’s old club Hamburg.
Of course, there is always the option to stay at Spurs but there’s been no word yet from player or head coach on this subject. Do you want VDV in the squad as part of the new AVB revolution?
I have a feeling Rafa will be off this summer.
It will be a shame as he has been brilliant for us, though i just don’t see a position for him in AVB’s preferred system.
I think his wages could be use to strengthen other areas.
Its a shame hes not 32/33, an age where he may accept sitting on the bench a bit more, and helping bring our youngsters through as there is no doubting he has been a perfect role model for young players, and younger fans of our club. However, there is no denying Rafa still has plenty to offer at the highest level, it is just a shame that I do not think it will be with us.
If he goes, he will always be welcome back at our club, and will get a good reception if he returns on an opposing team,, not least, because of his love of scoring against arsenal!!!!
