It was just a friendly at Stevenage but there were many positives to take out of the 2-0 victory at Broadhall Way and many Spurs fans would have been delighted to see Tom Huddlestone make a return to action.

Thudd has endured an injury plagued couple of years at the club but if he is fit to play a full part this season, it highlights an ‘abundance of riches’ amongst other things, at the club.

Aside from Tom, AVB could select from Parker, Sandro, Lennon, Bale, VDV, Sigurdsson, Livermore, and maybe Bentley, Rose and Pienaar. And those are just the ones I can remember.

In addition, while Modric looks set to leave, a replacement such as Moutinho or Dzagoev is likely to come the other way.

Villas-Boas has hinted at playing ten behind a lone striker which does create a bit of room and he also looks more likely to apply squad rotation that the previous manager but with five places up for grabs, what’s your first choice midfield?

  1. Good to see Sig and Falque on the scoresheet, even if it was just a friendly.
Would like Sandro and Parker played together in midfield behind sig with Lennon and Bale on either flanks. But where does that leave VDV and the recovering Thudd? Gio & Pienaar too if he doesn’t move back to Everton. We have a lot of options in Midfield!

  2. Going with the team we have now excluding Modric. Im hoping we play a 4-2-3-1 against the harder opposition!

    Brad
    Walker-Kaboul-Vertonghen-BAE
    Sandro-Hudd
    Lennon-Sigg/VDV-Bale
    Defoe (Need a New Striker)

For the home games and against the “easier” opposition we should play a 4-3-3.

    Brad
    Walker-Kaboul-Vertonghen-BAE
    Sandro-VDV-Sigg
    Lennon-Defoe-Bale.

  3. I was at the game last night and Townsend and Carroll looked very sharp on and off the ball. I don’t think they should be overlooked.

  4. This is going to be a no brainier for me Walker Dawson Vertonghan Kaboul Lennon Huddlestone Siggy Bale Van (Defoe) Ady . We have the best wingers around for pace and if they have no quality supply they are no good Huddlestone will if his ankle is fully healed supply the defence splitting passes and also help at corners with his 6ft3 frame can also deliver free kicks and score the odd winner. This is the conundrum AVB will find out if he sticks with Van upfront if Siggy is has good has we all think we wont need Van because what did us last season was lack of rotation. we will see in America who has shirt and who will need too wait for there chance. 5. to be perfectly honest i cud only dream but this is the line up id love to see. 1st team
    lloris
    walker kaboul verthonghen bae
    sadro mouthino
    hulk sigurdsson bale
    damiao

    2nd team

    friedel
    knaughton dawson caulker fryers
    parker thudd
    lennon vdv gio
    defoe

obviously squad rotation and injury swaps. add in pienar caroll kane livermore. so sell modders bentley jenas bassong gallas gomes. should get 60 mill from that and buy hulk and moutino for that 60 mill and just stump up the 15 mill for lloris.

  6. Friedel
    Walker, Vertonghen, Kaboul, BAE
    Sandro, Parker
    Lennon, Sigurdsson, Bale
    Adebayor*

Personally would rather see us spend the Modric money on Damaio or LLorente (suspect Cavani/Falcao/Neymar beyond our range!).
If we’re going to play the “AVB way” with 2 holding midfielders & one advanced, we are pretty well served with the current squad (Hudd/Livermore/Jenas covering for Sandro+Parker, & Sigurdsson/Vdv battling it out for the advanced role.

Beyond strikers, hope we’re also going to buy cover for wide roles – doesn’t look like we’ve got anyone other than Bentley at the moment !. Hoillett on a free is a no-brainer.

  7. Also dont see why we are not in for Ba and hoilett two both good Players with Epl experience! GK we should have a look at marc-André ter Stegen he is a class goalie we could probably get him for 7-10M and is only 20 so could be in the squad for another 15-20 years!

  8. You make it sound so defence and rigid. I hope it’s not that bland. I would prefer a mindset of attack – 4-3-3. And personally think this midfield 3 combination would be immense. Sigg – Sandro – Bale. All 3 are over 6 foot. All 3 are quick(Sandro… Er), clever, and good footballers. We know Sandro and Bale can do their jobs defensively. If Sigg can too, then those 3 could be an imposing force on any side. Bale has what it takes to become a Steven Gerrard should he want. However I think it’s unlikely that both if even 1 will be used in the mid department – given the abundance their and the plight we have upfront now. We can all guess what we want for now. But unfortunately we have to be patient and wait for AVB to assess what our squad has and doesn’t have in his eyes. But my money is on this – Livermore, Huddlestone, and Lennon won’t make the grade, Livermore because for all his effort he is not abundantly talented, Thudd because he’ll be too rusty to have a chance (maybe a loan), Lennon because he doesn’t fit in a 4-3-3. Interestingly.. I rate Bassong, Giovanni and … yes… David Bentley have a chance to make it. Bentley in the Midfield 3 and Giovanni in the attacking 3.
