You’d think there were enough defensive midfielders at Spurs already but perhaps it’s injury concerns that have led to media speculation about more signings in the January transfer window.

One of the more unlikely links is with 30 year old River Plate’s Leonardo Ponzio, a man with seven full Argentinean caps to his name. While many will dismiss this one straight away as mere paper talk, the player himself claims he has been watched by Tottenham’s scouts.

“I knew that some people came to watch me in the match against Boca and I think in another game too,” the player said.

“Nobody spoke with me about a possible transfer or real interest. Anyway, regarding my future, I am very comfortable where I am and I feel respect. I would like to take advantage of this moment.”

Those ‘people’ are thought to have come from White Hart Lane but when questioned about a move to England, Ponzio wasn’t exactly brimming with enthusiasm.

“What comes for my career from now on will be analysed. At my age I have to analyse everything with my family,” he added.

“I am at a good personal moment and I have to keep on going on in that way. I would like to have the chance to play for the national team again, so I have to keep on doing well at River.”

For many reasons, this does look like a non-starter but does it make any sense for Spurs to go after a defensive midfielder when the window opens again?

  1. I’d go for Jordy Clasie or Roberto Firmino over this guy. Fit into Levy’s policy blah blah blah. Plus Firmino’s more of a B2B midfielder with goals and tackles in him. Clasie’s a more tenacious Tom Carroll.

  3. All tabloid nonsense. Sandro and Parker can fulfil this role. We need decent replacements for Modric and VDV pronto.
