Andre Villas-Boas has already suggested that he won’t be adding to the Spurs squad in January but if he has to make just one signing, it could well be the former Porto midfielder Joao Moutinho. The Portuguese international almost signed for the club at the end of August and while AVB insisted that there was nothing in his attendance at Porto’s Champions League game this weekend, Moutinho must have been a focus of his attention.
“Whenever Porto are close to the place where I am, I go see them,” said Villas-Boas after the match.
“I went to see them last season against Manchester City and took the opportunity to go and see them again against PSG.”
AVB could be completely right – he met Hulk back in the summer and that led to a host of rumours – but basic logic suggests that Spurs would go back in. They just failed to sign Moutinho in the summer and why would the midfielder not be able to strengthen the squad this time around?
It would be wiser to spend that amount of money on Demba Ba or Huntelaar, Dries Mertens (PSV Eindhoven, fast, good skill, can play on both wings and as a striker) and an extra full back.
Its a hard one…
I actually think we need a left back, Naughton is a decent right back but he struggles at left back……BAE is great but he needs competition, I would go and try and sign Coentrao, he can play left mid and left back.
I also think we need another winger, again Coentrao could solve this problem.
We also need a creative midfielder and Striker…..Huntelaar and Moutinho or Isco
If it was down to me right now and we could only have one it would be COENTRAO
Would be amazing but I think we missed out and 2nd chances does not come round easily

Peter, why do you think we should buy an extra full back? We’ve got Walker, BAE and Naughton, and Vertonghen. Plus Rose to come back if needed. I’m quite happy with that. But striker, certainly.
David, Naughton and Rose are not good enough to start for Spurs, while Rose is desperate for starting opportunities, for his own sake I would sell him. Both of these players have great potential but they have little furture in Spurs’s ambition.
Our currently midfield is still lacking the creativity even though we have some amazing players, someone like Joao Moutinho would provide us with a great value of creativity.
You are one sexy fucker.
Good points well made Romeo Longsword. And a cracking Porn name too,.
Its very rare to hear measured and what appears to be knowleagable opinion on this website! – Very refreshing!
IMO Moutihnio in the winter is a big dud! – Porto are loaded and competing in CL after Jan so no need to sell for cash and player can compete in CL,.
It would be great if we do get him in the summer! – Even better if I’m a complete prick and we get him in Jan!! :)) – Another striker would be handy too! COYS
Are you saying that you are more measured than the average punter on here? Your not ok, nobody cares what you have to say you have the iq of a pikey.
Get it done now! Why wait until last min!
Herman just spoke to AVB and he is flying out tonight after the game to buy Moutinho…. also is very interested in SWP from QPR
Just saying guys your thanks is not needed
COYS
I agree whole heartedly with the amazingly named Romeo Longsword. Also, I feel I need to say that I’m not overly excited about Moutinho although admittedly I have only really seen him in the Euros. I do however watch a lot of spanish football and my shouts for a creative midfielder would be Isco, essentially a young Iniesta/David Silva and a couple million cheaper. Sadly like Porto, Malaga are going well in the Champions League, difference is they are completely skint.
We desperately need another striker too. Has to be Ba or Huntelaar, not many other realistic targets available. There is of course Llorente in the summer but I think Champions League football is a necessity there.

What?!
Do you think Roman down the road will lend us the money pt make these purchases! I can’t believe how unrealistic some people are. And by the way it SPURS not SPURES….i do wonder sometimes!
U hav a gud left bak 4rm cameroun & 2 maturing ones. Its okay. Havin 2 many gud players 4 one position causes division. I agree wit d creativity issue but moutinho plays d same position as dembele
I really want to see AVB’s first 11 when Parker came back. If it were me I might try 4-3-3 have Sandro Dembele Parker in the middle and Bale Defoe Lennon up front. Give Dembele more free role to go up and create more. We don’t really need to sign anyone. Save that money to buy 1 big player for UCL next year.
We currently have no natural deep-lying playmakers in the squad. In order to play in AVB’s formidable 4-3-3 formation we certainly need one. Modric is indeed one of the best in the world in that position but Moutinho is equally effective, he had an incredible 2011-12 season and is far more defensively capable and consistent than Modric. AVB is always moving towards the 4-3-3 (largely because it is the best formation in the modern game really) and the likes of Dembele and Sigurdsson are ideal candidates for the furthest central midfield role, placed slightly ahead and to the side of Moutinho with either Sandro or Parker behind playing in a defensive midfield role directly down the spine of the team. Our only issue would lie in lack of squad depth, there would be no substitute deep-lying playmaker so we would be forced to revert to inferior 4-2-3-1 and hopefully not but maybe necessary 4-4-2 lineups. AVB failed at Chelsea because he failed to purchase a deep-lying playmaker (remember how hard Chelsea tried to buy Modric…?) and didn’t implement a back up plan leading to some miserable performances. At Tottenham he has tried out a combative and physical 4-2-3-1 with the very unfortunate last minute failure in the much discussed Moutinho transfer, relying on physical defending and energetic pressing, individual moments of brilliance and very importantly direct dribbling and running at the opposing team particularly from our most important players Bale and Dembele. This was shown most obviously in our brilliant performance against Manchester United: http://www.zonalmarking.net/2012/10/01/manchester-united-2-3-tottenham-spurs-attack-directly-then-defend-deep/ Moutinho would enable AVB to complete the ‘Tottenham Project’ and create the best midfield in the league by far, and what with the midfield being the key to any football match and with a 4-3-3 being able to outnumber most other teams in the league in the midfield, we can absolutely dominate games and I’m sure threaten the top league positions and at least secure 3rd.
Julian that is a top post.
…..why would Moutinho come in January when FC Porto are still in the Champion’s League? If he’s going to come at all, summer 2013 is much more likely – IF Spurs have Champion’s League football to offer.
