There are many stories linking Spurs with a January move for Schalke 04 midfielder Lewis Holtby but what do we know about the player and is there any chance of this one progressing beyond mere paper talk?

Holtby is just 22 and as his name might suggest, he had the option of playing for either England or Germany by virtue of an English father and a German mother. He chose the country of his birth and to date has made just three appearances for the national side since 2010.

His goals to game ratio isn’t the worst and to date, he has nine goals in just over 50 senior appearances for Schalke.

Holtby is out of contract at the end of the season but could be available for a knock-down fee this month. Reports claims Spurs are in the frame but is there really any need for an addition to the squad in the midfield area?
