If the newspapers are to be believed, Spurs are looking in some very unexpected places in order to reinforce their front line this month. Firstly, there were the links – as yet unsubstantiated – to Celtic’s Gary Hooper and now, the club are reported to be looking in England’s second tier.

The player in question is Matej Vydra, a Czech international who is currently on loan at Watford from his parent club Udinese. Vydra is just 20 but his professional career started in his homeland at the age of 16.

He hadn’t featured a great deal for any of his three clubs until the Watford move came up. At Udinese he’s played twice since 2010 but at Watford, Vydra has managed an impressive 16 strikes in 23 appearances.

Still – it’s only the championship but the player’s agent claims that Premier League clubs are watching his client.

“At the moment, five Premier League clubs are interested in Matej,” said Ondrej Chovanec. “But we want Matej to stay with Watford at least until the summer. We are not planning any rush move for him.”

At 20, he may not solve our striker issues straight away but is Matej Vydra worth a gamble as a squad member, based on his record at Vicarage Road?

  1. We have better players in the club just waiting to be given a chance. Please dont tell me he is better than Obika or Coulibaly or any of the other boys we have on our books.

  2. This guy is class
I’d be up for having him for sure
However, I’d absolutely prefer us to go and spend on a big signing like Damaio or Negredo, but I’d 100% take Vydra over nobody!

      • My mate’s got a season ticket at Watford and has been raving about him since day one!
At 20 years old he’s destroying the championship and got Watford to the playoff positions almost on his own.
Maybe class was an overstatement, but he’s good and definitely has the potential to become a top player.

      • Do you actually know anything about Udinese? They play with a lone striker and he happens to be Di Natale… the guy who is second in scoring in Serie A this season and gets 28 goals a season… why would they not loan out Vydra? Doesn’t mean they dont want him…
The kid had his first cap for the Czech senior team as a teenager. Lots of excitement around this guy over here in Czech…. definite good investment.

  3. No one knew MODRIC or SANDRO WHEN THEY CAME TO SPURS. So you never know. He may turn out to be a good signing. Sometimes success comes from unexpected sources.

  4. Scored again today, and got an assist. The owner of Udinese also owns Watford and Granada, so he moves his players around to give them the best chance for development, exposure and therefore profit. Finds diamonds in the rough, polishes them, sells them.

We definitely need a striker, and as Obika/Coulthirst are solely playing U21 or below, I think it’s safe to say that they aren’t thought to be good enough at this stage. Think an Aspas type player would be great. Or to be ridiculous Jovetic…class, but more attainable than a Cavani or Falcao with their insane release clauses. Jovetic’s is supposedly £25 million…
