Tottenham’s striking options received an unlikely volunteer at the weekend in the shape of our defensive midfielder Moussa Dembele. The Belgian scored on his debut against Norwich earlier in the season and with a lack of cover up front, Dembele offered his services should Andre Villas-Boas wish to take that chance.
Asked if he would play up front if needed, Moussa said,
“Of course, if the manager thinks that is the best option, why not?”
Dembele can play as an attacking midfielder too and before he came to England, his goal scoring ratio was a very respectable one. In Holland for example, he netted ten times in 39 games for AZ before maintaining a similar record at AZ with 37 goals in 160 appearances.
Since then however, goal scoring has dipped but then again, this isn’t the player’s job.
It’s unclear as to why Moussa was asked this question in the first place but it was one of the more interesting striking options to be suggested. In your opinion, is it worth a punt in the Europa League this week?

What a ridiculous article. He is crucial in central midfield and we have Adebayor, Dempsey and Bale who can play upfront. No idea what all the fuss is about with forwards. We have plenty of attacking options.

Have to say, I agree with Big Mal, here. Moussa is far too important in the engine room to EVEN consider such an idea. Besides, Dembele is not exactly a natural when it comes to striking a ball, is he?
I thought Dempsey played quite well up top angainst WBA and Newcastle, considering it isn’t his preferred position. I’m confident he can perform a ‘poacher type’ role there should he need to.
Plus Ade’s back now, ready to terrorise, as part of a mouthwatering quartet upfront.

I also have heard (mainly from Jermain himself) that Defoe is a quick healer, and I for one CHOOSE to BELIEVE him!!!
I think the enforced rest will do him some good and ensure he is back to his razor sharp best, upon his return to the team.

He has been somewhat dissapointing in CM of late and it’s time for Holtby to replace hi, for a game or two. HHXX

Matthew, I think that sums it up really. It was a non story in the first place, a bit of banter and it actually was would you play ‘off the striker’ (which I am sure he could do) not ‘as a striker’ which is completely different. Some say he had a poor game on Saturday, but actually his work rate was phenominal and he makes as many tackles as Scott Parker – we are a much poorer team without him in centre mid as his early season injury demonstrated. Crucial, crucial player.
Dembele is class his ability has allowed him to play in different positions throughout his career.The guy could dribble his way out of hell but recently hes been uncharacteristically losing possesion a bit recently.I put it down to maybe not being 100% fit but he needs to keep concentration and pass it forward a bit quicker and get back to his earlier form .He still stands out as a great performer but theres always room for improvement .
I also think this suggestion ridiculous.
There has been nothing in his play to suggest that he could play as a striker in the Prem.
At Fulham, and at Spurs, his dribbles always come to an end when he gets close to the penalty area.
In fact, I’m not sure that he ever runs into the area.
Also, he has demonstrated a great reluctance to shoot at goal.
He clearly doesn’t think of himself as a goal scorer, so why does the author of this piece?
