Tottenham are being widely tipped today to be preparing a bid for FC Twente’s Brazilian born defender Douglas. The 25 year old has been with the Dutch club since 2007 and in that time has developed to become first choice in the heart of the defence.

Douglas is by all accounts a solid centre half and while he has no international recognition as yet, he has been called into Holland’s full squad after a protracted application for Dutch citizenship.

With William Gallas set to leave at the end of the season, a move for Douglas might make sense but it goes against the claims made by Andre Villas-Boas in February that the club would not start another season with an abundance of central defenders.

‘We won’t start another season with five centre-backs,’ Villas-Boas said at the time.

‘It’s a difficult one. We have five top central defenders at the moment – a mixture of young players coming through with lots of experience, and then you have such tremendous central defenders as William, Dawson and Younes Kaboul.”

AVB went on to praise William Gallas but surely the veteran Frenchman is the odd man out this summer. That leaves the question as to who will miss out if another centre half arrives but perhaps the answer to that question is no-one, and the claims over Douglas or anyone else are just paper talk once again.

  1. I think we need to stop taking chances and just poach a player like Ashley Williams from Swans or dig deep and get Samba from QPR. We need solid defense. Thats what’s killing us against the top clubs.

  2. i think all this links distracts us from our real targets – which are strikers and a player in the mould of moutinho. we really don’t need defenders, unless they are very young and have very good potentials.
