With uncertainty over Gareth Bale’s exact level of fitness ahead of the Manchester City game, some Spurs fans had mixed opinions as to whether the Welshman should take to the field. If it was going to be a risk, was it one that was worth taking and did our season really hinge on this one game?

After yesterday’s match, head coach Andre Villas-Boas revealed that the player has really made his own decision.

“We had discussions with Gareth about his injury and he gave us the green light,” Villas-Boas told the BBC.

“Gareth is a monster physically. All the credit goes to him for hanging on for the full 90 minutes and playing so well. He produced a great, great performance.”

Gareth played the full 90 on Sunday and there looked to be no issues at all with his fitness. While the three substitutions undoubtedly turned the game, Bale’s contribution was vital once again and we can only be grateful for a bit of blood spinning aligned to his tremendous powers of recovery.
