Gareth Bale may have given the green light to his head coach with regard to his place in the side on Sunday but the winger later admitted that it was very ‘touch and go’.

After the Manchester City game, head coach Andre Villas-Boas confirmed that his decision was guided by the player.

“We had discussions with Gareth about his injury and he gave us the green light,” Andre was quoted as saying.

Bale added that the ankle problem wasn’t completely sorted, even though the Welshman appeared to show no signs of a problem throughout the match.

“It was touch and go whether I was going to play — but thankfully I got through it OK,” he said.

“It was a bit sore in the first half but I got more confident in the second half. It hurts but it’s just about managing it and carrying on.”

Fortunately, there is no midweek game now until May 8th so a week’s rest will hopefully have Gareth Bale back to 100% fitness ahead of our crucial schedule.
