The media’s perception of transfer priorities for any club is interesting to monitor and in the last few days, everyone seems agreed that we need to pursue a defensive midfielder. Scott Parker is 33 in October and amidst rumours of a move to anywhere from Selhurst Park to Fiorentina, replacements are being lined up.
Fredy Guarin and Radja Nainggolan have both been in the frame over the last 24 hours with suggestions that Spurs have had an initial bid for Guarin rejected by current club Inter. All of this avoids the issue that even with Scott Parker out of the squad, Sandro must surely be first choice in that position.
Then there are the wingers – Alex Kacaniklic of Fulham is one, closely followed by Barca’s Ibrahim Afellay who has been mentioned several times in connection with Spurs over the course of the last two years.
The wingers are intended to replace Gareth Bale but they also make sense if the Welshman stays because he is far more likely to be used in a central position in 2013-14. With cover on the bench, an out-and-out wide man would be a shrewd purchase ahead of the new campaign.
But the real priority, as it has been for several seasons now, is a striker and with countless names put forward for this vacancy, this must surely be the time for the club to make a move.
That just leaves the defence which may stay as it is unless BAE does make a move away from the club – a suggestion that AVB has denied in the past.
Where are the areas, obvious or otherwise, where you think Spurs need to strengthen this summer?
