It had always seemed unlikely that Andre Villas-Boas would be adding a central defender to his shopping list this summer but will injury concerns force the Coach to seek cover ahead of the new campaign?

That’s what the press are suggesting this morning as the club heads towards the first game of the season with the prospect of Jan Vertonghen and Younes Kaboul having to sit out the clash with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

There are two names currently in the frame as possible back up, the first of which is Tiago Ilori, a 20 year old who is on the fringes of the squad at Sporting Lisbon. Secondly, the media turn to Vlad Chiriches, who at 23, has more club experience with Steaua Bucharest and looks a more likely prospect – if there’s any truth in the story.

Hopefully, the worst case scenario for Vertonghen is that he misses the first couple of weeks of the season but if there is any substance to either of these rumours, there may just be concerns over the long term prognosis for Younes Kaboul.

    • Are you mental? dispense with Kaboul? Do you not remember how EPIC he was for 2 seasons before he got injured?! If he gets another bad injury like last year, then maybe (and its a big maybe) I’ll agree, but to label him as ‘injury prone’ is just ridiculous

  1. Been reading for a while now that Kaboul has a chronic bone-on-bone condition that will need to be nursed and that we may need to bring in another CB. Not sure about the names mentioned, but sadly, poor Younes may be in for a rocky road. I really hope it’s better than is feared by some.

  2. King all over again our strongest defender and he’s got a s bad knee problem why not go for lescott proven and in my opinion a very good player?
