Spurs edged past Crystal Palace with a 1-0 win at Selhurst Park earlier today although the scoreline didn’t quite reflect our dominance of the game overall. There may be some concerns over the number of shots that troubled Julian Speroni in the Eagles goal but an opening day victory is something of a rarity for the club and it was one that was most welcome.
All four of our summer signings made their debuts for the club and while Roberto Soldado sealed the game from the penalty spot, Etienne Capoue was arguably the standout of the four with an assured display after coming off the bench in the second period.
After the match, Andre Villas-Boas declared himself delighted with the win.
“I’m extremely happy,” said AVB. “It was a good performance, we created lots of chances and we were unlucky not to put the game to bed after the goal.
“It’s always difficult to go to Palace and to perform like that gives us a positive boost of confidence.
“It’s a good three points for us at an away ground and hopefully we can continue with this level of performance.”
Spurs’ next league game is against Swansea next Sunday but before that we have our Europa League qualifier in Tbilisi on Thursday. It wasn’t the prettiest afternoon but the first three points are in the bag and that’s three more than we had at this point 12 months ago!
