Spurs had been linked with a move for Chelsea’s Spanish midfielder Juan Mata towards the tail end of the transfer window and according to reports, the club had shown an interest in the 25 year old before he left Valencia in 2011.
Those reports had intensified after recent the fall out between the player and his current coach.
“I want to play Mata and Oscar, but Juan has to work and adapt to a certain style of play because I’m not ready to change Oscar’s position,” said Jose Mourinho.
“Juan has to learn to play the way I want to play, to be more consistent.”
It won’t be too long until the January window is open and as the man who brought Juan Mata to the Bridge, Andre Villas-Boas has been predictably touted to take advantage of the situation.
However, AVB expects things to improve and for the player to regain his place at the Bridge.
“I suppose the time that he’s not being given now, with the talent that he has he will overcome it and jump back into the team because he is that player, that special,” he said during today’s press conference.
When asked if he was interested in signing Mata, AVB just said: “No, I don’t think so.”
The player himself may or may not work himself back into his coach’s affections or alternatively, Chelsea’s boss may have left by the end of the season – it happens.
Whatever transpires, Juan Mata at Spurs may be a nice thought but it seems a distant prospect.
every team should know by now that if Mata goes to Tottenham, then its Game Over for them.
Jose already declared that Tottenham were the King of the transfer window by miles. So it makes 0 sense what so ever for Chelsea to sell Mata to Tottenham. Even a tie vs Chelsea on saturday would compound this fact. AVB is just realistic. if sold, Mata would be sold to Man U/Man City/etc. But NOT Tottenham
