It wasn’t pretty by any means but Spurs overcame Anzhi and their terrible surface to gain a comfortable 2-0 victory in Thursday’s Europa League clash. First half goals from Jermain Defoe and Nacer Chadli sealed the win and Lewis Holtby, who had a hand in both declared it as ‘job done’.

Speaking after the match, head Coach Andre Villas-Boas praised the team for coming through in tricky conditions.

“The conditions were difficult but we had a great first half, where we created a lot, kept the ball well and deserved the lead,” AVB said.

“Anji looked threatening on the counter, waiting for the opportunity to surprise us, so we had to be aware.

“In the second half we lost control of possession a little, Anji came out stronger and could have surprised us.

“However, defensively we were sound and managed to take a deserved win.

“A win is what we wanted, and it gives us the opportunity in the next games against Sheriff to ensure qualification. That is extremely important for us.”

So it is indeed job done and in an admittedly weak group, two more wins in upcoming back to back games against FC Sheriff will ensure progression to the next phase.

  1. Thatw what we want! – Then we can rotate till the cows come home until the tournament proper and focus on the league! COYS.

  2. We really need these small tournament to keep the whole squad fresh and also all players match fit. Fryers, Sandro Lamela really needs these games. They all looked some what off form.
But I will take 2-0 away in Europe (especially over East) any day of the week..

  3. I have got to say this is by far the most excited about a Spurs team in my lifetime. Last night was a very professional performance. Still though I don’t see what all the money was paid for Lamela, he looks right out of his depth. Really hope Lennon comes back all guns blazing. COYS
