Tottenham moved into the Champions League places with an impressive 2-0 win at struggling Southampton. It was Mauricio Pochettino’s first win at St Mary’s since leaving the south coast club.
Harry Kane gave Spurs the lead with a powerful run and cool finish five minutes before half time. Moments later, Dele Alli made sure the visitors went into the break with a comfortable lead, tapping in a Kyle Walker cross to make it 2-0.
Pochettino’s side put in a professional display in the second half, preventing Southampton from creating anything meaningful.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the performance and result.
O Mousa Dembele, o Mousa Dembele. #COYS ??? pic.twitter.com/FBhYEf1zXX

Best performances overall: Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Dier, Dembélé, Lamela and Kane. Spine. Kept the dangerous Mané/Pelle/Tadic quiet.

Credit to Pochettino & the players, rightfully criticised for our display against Newcastle, but showed the perfect response today.

Lloris, Kane & Dembele really good too, & I thought Alli & Walker also finished strongly after shaky starts. Good team effort. #COYS

#THFC were much more functional than exceptional, but delightfully decisive on the break. #SaintsFC had the cutting edge of a plastic spoon.

Very good team performance. Shift in attitude evident with our response to getting the lead. We didn't ease off the gas. Got stronger

We've played better and lost/drawn. Southampton luckily for us very poor. That 10 min spell before half time won us the game. Clinical today

Nicely done after a shaky start. Chances taken. Good second half. Verts strong, all upped game after last week. Dembele back…

Decent performance. Harry Kane was by far the Man of the Match #COYS

#thfc into the top 4 for the first time this season. Kane, Alli excellent but Lloris, Vertonghen, Alderweireld made important stops at 0-0.

Dembele was quality today. Really an integral part of our midfield. We'd have struggled keep that 2-0 lead in tact if it wasn't for him.
