Reports from Germany claim that Bayern Munich are interested in signing Eric Dier.

Bild claim that Bayern were impressed with Dier’s recent performance at White Hart Lane against Borussia Dortmund. His recent winning goal in England’s 3-2 victory in Berlin will have also served to raise his profile in Germany.

Bayern could be looking towards Dier as they seek a long-term replacement for their deep-lying midfielder Xabi Alonso. The Spanish star is now aged 34 and his contract expires in 2017.

Though very different players, Dier has shown remarkable adaptability to perform so well in a midfield role this season. Also able to play as a right-back or in central defence, he certainly fits into mould of some of Bayern’s own versatile defensive personnel.

An inevitable consequence of Tottenham’s successful season is that our best players will be linked with other teams. Thankfully, the number of clubs who could conceivably turn our best players’ heads is getting slimmer and slimmer.

It is now some years since Spurs lost one of their stars to a domestic rival and this seems an even more remote possibility considering the current Premier League table. That leaves the giants of Europe, of which Bayern are one of the few clubs with the financial clout to unsettle our players.

It remains to be seen as to whether the influx of fresh TV money and the move to the new stadium will bring an end to Spurs having their best players poached. One thing for sure is that the emergence of young talent such as Dier, Dele Alli and Harry Kane, will see our resolve tested sooner rather than later.
