One of the areas of the squad that Tottenham have yet to address during the summer transfer window is some right-sided cover for Toby Alderweireld at centre-back.

Reports from Germany claim that the man that Spurs want to fill the gap is Matthias Ginter.

Ginter has won nine caps for Germany and at 22-years old, fits the profile of the young, improvable type of player that the club generally tries to sign.

What’s more questionable is whether Ginter’s best position is central defence. Last season he was mostly played at right-back by Thomas Tuchel and occasionally as a defensive midfielder.

With Tottenham having plenty of options in these positions and Ginter yet to prove himself as a reliable centre-back, it would be a curious solution to Mauricio Pochettino’s problem.

The fee of £12m also seems very small for a player of Ginter’s youth and promise. We won’t be holding our breath on this one, especially since it’s reported by the paper that got us all excited about the prospect of signing Mario Gotze.
