Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t tend to give much away in his press conferences, but this week he seemed to let slip his intentions towards the Europa League.
When asked as to whether the upcoming Premier League game against Stoke or the midweek Europa League match with Monaco was his priority, Pochettino confirmed that Saturday’s fixture was the most important.
It will be interesting to see if Pochettino’s attitude extends beyond Monaco to CSKA Moscow and Bayer Leverkusen.
While Monaco were just about the most difficult side that Spurs could draw from pot four, they were beaten 4-1 at White Hart Lane in the Europa League last season.
That was with a team that featured second-string personnel such as Kieran Trippier, Kevin Wimmer, Ben Davies, Tom Carroll, Clinton N’Jie, Josh Onomah and Heung-Min Son as a lone striker.
With the quality of the squad having been strengthened over the summer, there’s no reason why Pochettino shouldn’t decide to prioritise the Premier League, having nearly won it last season.
After all, many have joked that Spurs have managed to draw a Europa League group in the Champions League. If that’s the case, then the fringe players should be good enough to ensure passage to the knockout rounds.
