When a club breaks it’s transfer record you’d expect the player to be a success, but in recent years this label has proved to be a curse for expensive signings at White Hart Lane.
Spurs have broke their record to sign the likes of Alf Ramsey, Danny Blanchflower, Cliff Jones, Jimmy Greaves, Martin Chivers, Martin Peters, Steve Archibald and Paul Gascoigne. Back then Tottenham were able to pay top dollar to attract top talent.
The Premier League has changed things. Now no longer able to compete with richer clubs in England when it comes to fees and wages, Spurs find themselves taking gambles even when breaking their own transfer records.
Les Ferdinand, Sergei Rebrov, Darren Bent, David Bentley and Roberto Soldado all failed to live up to their price tags. Only Luka Modric has really justified the breaking of our transfer record, with the jury still being out on Erik Lamela.
The latest record breaking fee paid was the £30m that brought Moussa Sissoko from Newcastle and he could turn out to be the worst signing of the lot. Since being snapped up on deadline day he has made only nine appearances and couldn’t even make the squad of 18 for Saturday’s match with Chelsea.
You’d hope that when spending a record amount of money, it would be for a player that the club really wanted, rather than a last-minute panic buy to replace Nacer Chadli. Certainly you would think the player would improve the starting lineup, but Sissoko always looked likely to be a squad player at best.
Newcastle fans could not believe their luck in securing such a high fee for the player, after his storming Euro 2016 campaign. Bought for just £1.5m in 2013, Sissoko had his moments at Newcastle but was inconsistent. He’s yet to find any form at Tottenham.
Mauricio Pochettino has gone public on his decision to axe Sissoko for the trip to Stamford Bridge.
“Football is not about money,” he said.
“You need to show on the training ground you are better than another team-mate and you deserve to be involved.”
Pochettino’s comments suggest that he is unimpressed with the player and when that’s been the case in the past, he’s proved to be reluctant to change his mind. Even new signings like Federico Fazio and Benjamin Stambouli were quickly shipped out, once Pochettino had made up his mind that they weren’t good enough.
Sissoko needs to knuckle down in training and when he gets an opportunity, must show the form that won him the move in the summer. If he fails to do so, he could well go down as the worst signing in Tottenham’s history.
There was talk on the sites that the deal was a pay per year he plays for us so 6yrs contract time 5million per year .So if we sell him in the summer thats only 5 million and the new club takes over .Seems strange but also sounds DL type deal little risk .
He already is Spurs worst ever signing. Very average footballer, who is best suited to a championship team. He also seems a bit lazy like Adebayor. Spurs should have learned their lesson after the Adebayor saga.
Hopefully, Spurs can ship him out in January.

Bar Wanyama, every signing was POOR… It’s got Levy’s fingerprints all over it!! Cheap and pointless!! Nkoudo and Jannsen seem really good young lads but they’re not up to standard, then we chased a 3rd choice GK for a month and topped it off with sissoko!! Literally a FARCE of a window!!!.. Again, outside of Wanyama, who allows Dier to have a rest/cover CB (averagely it must be said) who has improved the team???!?!! NOT ONE of the other summer signings are good enough/even the right player to compete with/cover for ;

If Potch is impressed and can convince Levy, then he’ll open his chequebook – a little. Or maybe it’s not Potch, it’s the director of football (if we still have one). Someone certainly keeps getting it wrong. Soldado goes, Janssen comes in. N’jie goes, N’Koudo comes in. Bale goes, Paulinho, Capoue, Stromboli and Lamela come in; only Lamela is still there and he’s yet to demonstrate he’s worth £27M. Don’t think we can justkeep blaming Levy.
