There was a sense of frustration among Tottenham’s fanbase when Sadio Mane fired Liverpool to victory over Mauricio Pochettino’s men at Anfield last weekend.
Spurs had tried to sign Mane in the summer only for the winger to reject a move to London and instead join Liverpool in a deal worth upwards of £30 million.
While Mane was scoring two crucial goals, Tottenham’s £30 million man, Moussa Sissoko, was on the bench and only came on for the last 15 minutes.
Sissoko was brought in to fill the hole meant for Mane; right now you’d have to say Liverpool clearly got the better deal.
But why did Mane choose Merseyside over White Hart Lane? Well, the winger reportedly earns over £100,000-a-week at Liverpool, which suggests Tottenham were simply priced out.
Mane’s agent Bjorn Bezemer, however, claims money had nothing to do with it. He told The Guardian: “Sadio had five offers in the summer and financially all of them were good.
“We wanted the right team, with the right coach at the right moment to arrive at the next level,” he added. “That is the reason Sadio went to Anfield.”
It’s best to take quotes like this with a grain of salt. Taking money out of the equation, Spurs could have offered Mane Champions League football, whereas Liverpool had no European competition to offer at all.
With that in mind, it’s likely that there was a financial incentive involved when Mane and his agent made their decision — but who really knows?
