Tottenham are considering breaking their record transfer fee to sign Sevilla midfielder Steven N’Zonzi, according to reports in Italy.

N’Zonzi arrived at Sevilla from Stoke City for just £7 million two years ago. Since then he has become one of the most coveted midfielders in Spain — no midfielder made more passes than N’Zonzi in La Liga last season.

Sevilla are believed to value the 28-year-old at £35 million, and Italian outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport (via HITC) believes Spurs have not been put off by that valuation.

This story has shades of Tottenham’s reported pursuit of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Adrien Silva. While N’Zonzi would be a decent signing, I just can’t see Daniel Levy spending such a large amount of money of a 28-year-old.

Spurs were apparently interested in N’Zonzi back in 2012 when he was a Blackburn Rovers player. I have a random memory of going to an away game at Blackburn; Rafael van der Vaart scored two lovely goals in a 2-1 Tottenham win, but N’Zonzi was the best player on the pitch.
