Tottenham face competition from West Bromwich Albion to sign Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson, according to local reports in the Midlands.

Earlier this week we relayed a story claiming Spurs are eager to move on Austrian centre-back Kevin Wimmer in the coming weeks and replace him with an English centre-back.

A write-up in The Mirror suggested Spurs are monitoring Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson and Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson as potential replacements for Wimmer.

The Birmingham Mail claims West Brom are also eager to sign Gibson, but may be put off by his hefty price tag.

The report contends West Brom might be interested in “more affordable targets” such as Lamina Kone or Chris Smalling, who are believed to be valued between £12 million and £15 million.

That suggests Middlesbrough are commanding upwards of £15 million for captain Gibson. If Mauricio Pochettino really does want to sign an English defender, he may have to convince Daniel Levy that Gibson is worth a relatively large outlay.

  1. spurs are not broken they do not need fixing just a tweek here and there def a goal scorer and poss a right back if Bonzo goes not major surgery the kids will come good in time c.o.y.s

  2. Mawson maybe, but Gibson’s no better than Wimmer. Usual transfer nonsense though with Spurs reported to be ready to bid for just about anyone, in any position, with 2 legs.
