To the delight of the supporters, Tottenham started the new Premier League season with a comfortable 2-0 win at Newcastle.
Early in the second half, Jonjo Shelvey appeared to stamp on the foot of Dele Alli and subsequently saw red. You can watch that happen here.
Spurs took advantage of their man advantage and finally made a breakthrough with half an hour remaining when Alli converted Christian Eriksen’s excellent cross. Watch it here.
Ten minutes later, Ben Davies finished off a flowing Tottenham move to give the visitors breathing room going into the final stages. See it here.
Kyle Walker-Peters was awarded Man of the Match after an impressive debut.
Here’s the best of the reaction from Twitter.

#thfc KWP Sky’s MOTM. Remarkably harsh on Eriksen but he’ll have changed some opinions. Maybe Poch’s.

We weren’t great prior to the sending off truth be told but a solid start nonetheless with Eriksen & KWP the ones that stood out. #COYS

Honestly didn’t think KWP would play as well as he did. Fair play to him and to Poch for sticking him in there today. Took it in his stride.

#THFC go in to the season worrying about their full-backs…so one scores and the other gets Man Of The Match on his debut. Funny old game.

KWP fantastic in his debut. Maybe not ready to be a starter but certainly worth his place with the first team. Important to get 3 points.

Hardly out of 2nd gear for most of that. KWP good – nice for him to win Sky’s MOTM. Gutted for Kane, so close twice! Eriksen v good.

Made my day!
Kane got his break when soldado went off. Its the same for KWP, with trippier. A star is born. “Nice smile on his face aswell”
KWP, very impressive start. If he can show pace down that flank, and find more strength, then a star is truly born. Great performance too from Eriksen ..but for me, Dembele was our outstanding player. If only that man could remain fully fit throughout this coming season, and lose those tendencies to suffer from niggly injuries, especially in his hamstring.
