Tottenham are interested in signing Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez, according to reports in Italy.

Gimenez joined Atletico from Danubio in 2013 and has made over 100 appearances in all competitions for the Spanish club.

Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web claims Spurs face competition from Juventus, Manchester United and Arsenal.

The 23-year-old Uruguay international has struggled to cement a place in Atletico’s starting line-up this season and could seek a summer exit.

Tottenham might be on the lookout for a new centre-back this summer if Toby Alderweireld leaves the club.

The Belgian was left of the squad that faced Chelsea on Sunday despite playing 90 minutes for his country just a few days before.

A contract dispute combined with a lack of match fitness if believed to be the reason behind Alderweireld’s omission.

But there have been suggestions the 29-year-old has fallen out with manager Mauricio Pochettino and could be sold this summer, with PSG being touted as a potential destination.

Spurs have also been linked with Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt, who would arguably be a better but considerably more expensive signing than Giminez.
