Ajax have confirmed talks over a deal to take Justin Kluivert to Tottenham did take place last summer.
Earlier this week, Kluivert claimed Ajax tried to sell him to Spurs at the beginning of the season without his knowledge.
The 19-year-old insisted he will not sign a new contract with the Eredevisie club after losing trust in his employers.
Justin is the son of Barcelona legend Patrick Kluivert and is highly rated in the Netherlands – he has scored ten goals in 30 league appearances this season.
Ajax still still want the teenager to sign a new deal at the Amsterdam Arena, but they have admitted to speaking with Tottenham about a transfer last summer.
“In the conversations with Spurs about [Davinson] Sanchez there was a lateral discussion about Justin,” the club told Volkskrant (via Sport Witness).
“Spurs’ proposal was that he would then play in Amsterdam for another two years and that he would then go to Spurs.
“We did not go further on that, because we wanted to renew the contract with Justin. Just like we want to now.”
Lines of communication between Ajax and Tottenham have clearly remained opened over the years.
Davinson Sanchez, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen have all made the move from Amsterdam to north London in the recent past.
Spurs fans will be hoping the breakdown in talks over Kluivert won’t completely rule out a move for the attacker in the future.
