Tottenham made enquiries about Manchester United duo Anthony Martial and Juan Mata during the summer transfer window, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Martial was heavily linked with a move to Spurs earlier this summer but rumours of an approach from the Londoners went quiet towards the deadline.
Tottenham ended up failing to make a single summer signing after missing out on reported prime target Jack Grealish despite a late bid for the 22-year-old Aston Villa midfielder.
According to the MEN, Spurs did enquire about Martial earlier in the window but their approach was rebuffed.
And perhaps surprisingly, Tottenham also discussed the possibility of signing former Chelsea midfielder Mata – again, United weren’t willing to do business.
Maybe United’s unwillingness to discuss deals for those players had something to do with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s hardline stance over United target Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgian was back in Tottenham’s starting line-up for last weekend’s 3-1 victory over Fulham at Wembley and could feature against United at Old Trafford on Monday night.
