Toby Alderweireld could be offered the opportunity to sign a new long-term deal with Tottenham despite contract talks breaking down earlier this year, according to reports in Belgium.
The defender, who was excellent in Monday night’s 3-0 win at Manchester United, reportedly failed to agree terms on a new contract midway through last season and was subsequently left out of the team in numerous games.
However, Alderweireld didn’t secure a move away from the club over the summer and has started in each of Spurs’ last two matches.
And according to Belgian outlet HLN, the Belgian could be given one more chance to commit his long-term future to the club.
A new deal would likely eradicate the £25 million release clause which is thought to have been the major sticking point during previous negotiations.
Tying Alderweireld down to a new deal would be a huge coup for Tottenham considering the centre-back was odds-on to leave the club earlier this summer.
Though whether he is keen to stay beyond this season remains a mystery.
I suspect that ALL Spurs fans would be happy to see Toby sign a new longer term contract. COYS.
Make it happen Toby.
Nobody can blame Toby for wanting to wait and see if Man u. would live up to their promises. They had indicated they would pay more, but woodward, as usual, failed to fulfil his promise.
Time now for Toby to sign a 3 year contract with Spurs at a significantly higher salary. He is surely not intending to work for half wages in order to accommodate the people who let him down.
Dele & Ericksen too please Daniel.
Absolutely agree, Drud!
