Victor Wanyama has been accused of lacking professionalism by Kenya coach Sebastien Migne after the Tottenham star dropped out of upcoming international fixtures.
According to the London Evening Standard, Tottenham believe Wanyama was deemed unfit to travel with the Kenyan squad and was subsequently “withdrawn through official channels.”
But comments made by Migne suggest otherwise.
“Wanyama should have travelled so that our medical staff can assess his injury,” Migne said (via the Standard).
“We should be a bit professional in such situations.”
Wanyama was included in Spurs’ squad for the first time this term for Sunday’s defeat at Watford after injuring his knee during the pre-season tour of the US.
The midfielder missed four months of last season with a knee problem, but his new injury isn’t thought to be as serious.
Regardless, it seems Wanyama doesn’t consider himself to be playing international football this week after failing to play any minutes for Tottenham so far this season.
Spurs have finally gained some depth in central midfield with the return of Harry Winks, while Wanyama’s recovery has also come at a good time.
Both players will be hoping to feature when Tottenham take on Liverpool at Wembley after the international break.
One would think that Spurs know full well how good Wanyama is. He may have been on the bench for the Watford game but didn’t play. I don’t see how not wanting to play in an international friendly when he has played in 4 months is unprofessional.
