Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright says he feels sorry for Tottenham because of their lack of squad depth.
Spurs face Liverpool on Saturday hoping to recover from the defeat to Watford they suffered prior to the international break.
There have been question marks over the fitness of Harry Kane in recent months but the 25-year-old is likely to start against Liverpool.
And Wright has sympathy for Tottenham in that regard.
“People are talking about Harry Kane being injured or them possibly resting him,” Wright said on Sky Sports’ The Debate broadcast (via HITC).
“But if that’s the case I don’t see where their goals are going to be coming from. You have to feel for Spurs because although their first XI is very good, there’s not much to back it up.”
I disagree with Wright to an extent. Spurs have one of the best squads in the league in most positions – the likes of Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura haven’t always been guaranteed starters, which illustrates Tottenham’s depth.
However, he is right about Kane. Although Son, Moura and Dele Alli can all chip in with goals, Spurs don’t have a dedicated striker to provide cover for their talisman up front.
Kane is set to lead the line against Liverpool on Saturday, while Son is unlikely to start having played eight games in 26 days for South Korea.
