Jose Mourinho is confident of signing Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld for £40 million after Manchester United promised the Portuguese coach a new defender in January, according to the Sun.
Alderweireld’s contract expires at the end of the current season. Spurs have the option to extend it by a year, but that would trigger a £25 million release clause that can be met in the final two weeks of next summer’s transfer window.
As a result, Alderweireld was heavily linked with a move to United over the summer and reportedly continues to be on the radar of a number of top clubs across Europe.
The Sun claims Mourinho has been promised the Red Devils will bring in a new centre-back in the winter transfer window, and Alderweireld is at the top of his list.
The Belgian has worked his way back into Mauricio Pochettino’s good books this season, although his future was thrown into doubt once again when he was dropped for the north London derby defeat to Arsenal earlier this month.
United are believed to have other targets but Alderweireld is their priority. It will be interesting to see if Tottenham are willing to do a deal in January.
Why would Toby leave a club in the top three managed by a really good guy to join a club that has no chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions league and managed by Morose, Miserable, Moaning Mourihno?
Exactly, well said Simon! Useless journalism tbh
At the moment Toby is on a 75k pr week contract. Man Utd will easily double it, if not triple it without compromising the salary structure of the club. I dont know about anyone not willing to make a club change for those kind of numbers. This is after all, his last chance for a payday.
