Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is Manchester United’s number-one choice to take over at Old Trafford next summer, according to ESPN.
United parted company with Jose Mourinho on Tuesday following a 3-1 Premier League defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.
Pochettino has been linked with United in the past and speculation about a possible departure from Spurs is now likely to increase.
According to ESPN, the Red Devils are keen to appoint former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on an interim basis until the end of the season.
They will then make efforts to lure Pochettino from Tottenham, with the plan being the Argentinian is in place for the start of next season.
United are likely to be met with resistance from Spurs, who will almost certainly do all they can to convince Pochettino to stay put.
The former Espanyol and Southampton boss was heavily linked with Real Madrid over the summer, not long after signing a new contract with Tottenham.
The Real Madrid job may be available again at the end of the season, so Pochettino might have to choose between White Hart Lane, Old Trafford and the Bernabeu.
