Tottenham have had an offer for Torino midfielder Soualiho Meite turned down, according to reports in Italy.

Meite, a defensive midfielder, has scored two goals and provided one assists in 18 Serie A appearances so far this season.

Spurs are on the lookout for a new central midfielder following Mousa Dembele’s move to China.

Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport claims Tottenham made an approach to Torino for Meite this month but saw their offer for the 24-year-old turned down.

It is believed Torino have no interest in selling any of their best players midway through the season.

Spurs have also been linked with Paris Saint-Germain contract rebel Adrien Rabiot and Leicester City-bound Monaco midfielder Youri Tielemans in recent days.

But the Londoners don’t appear to be close to signing anyone before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Harry Winks has been playing as Tottenham’s deepest midfielder in the majority of games this season due to injuries to Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama.

Dier and Wanyama have now returned to the squad, but long-term questions marks over the duo’s ability and fitness could force Spurs into the market for a new defensive midfielder.

However, it doesn’t look like Tottenham will recruit one until the summer.
