Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar, according to the Mirror.

Schar, who joined Newcastle from Deportivo last summer, has scored three goals in 21 appearances at centre-back for the Magpies this season.

The Mirror claims Spurs were keen on the 27-year-old when he played for Swiss side Basel and could now revive their interest.

However, it is believed they will face competition from north London rivals Arsenal, who are also fond of Schar.

The Switzerland international has been in fine form of late, helping Newcastle to move away from the danger of relegation from the Premier League.

Tottenham are likely to be in need of a new centre-back this summer with Toby Alderweireld expected to leave the club this summer.

The Belgian, who was left out of the squad that travelled to Southampton on Saturday, will be available for £25 million this summer after activating a release clause in his contract.

Preferably Spurs will convince Alderweireld to sign a new deal, but it looks unlikely and the club should start searching for potential replacements.
