Arsenal are considering a move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld, according to the Sun.

The story is obviously speculative at best and its arrival has been inevitable for some time.

Alderweireld recently signed a one-year contract extension with Spurs, but in doing so the Belgian activated a £25 million release clause that can be triggered before the final two weeks of the upcoming summer transfer window.

As a result, a host of clubs have been linked with a cut-price swoop for Alderweireld, most notably Manchester United and Juventus.

But it was only a matter of time before the tabloids started linking the Tottenham star with Arsenal.

It makes sense in some ways; why wouldn’t Arsenal be interested in signing one of the Premier League’s leading centre-backs?

Indeed, it would be foolish for any club to ignore the chance of signing Alderweireld for just £25 million.

With that in mind, the story’s existence is logical – especially in a tabloid newspaper that generates many of the transfer rumours people come to hear.

But Spurs fans shouldn’t worry too much about it actually happening.
