Mauricio Pochettino has suggested Erik Lamela’s hamstring injury is a serious one amid fears the Tottenham Hotspur attacker could miss the remainder of the season.

Lamela has been absent for the last few weeks and has been ruled out of this weekend’s Premier League meeting with West Ham United.

Speaking about injuries in a press conference on Friday, Pochettino was downbeat about Lamela’s problem.

“Him, his family, us, the club, everyone – we feel very sad about his situation,” Pochettino said (via Dan Kilpatrick).

Lamela signed a new four-year contract with Spurs last summer and started the season brilliantly, contributing useful goals and assists in the early stages of the campaign.

However, a series of niggling injuries have prevented the Argentinian from getting a run in the team of late, and his season is beginning to be reminiscent of his Tottenham career to date.

In truth Lamela has always been a divisive figure among Spurs supporters, but it feels like more and more fans are growing tired of the 27-year-old’s lack of availability.

It’s obviously not his fault, but the club must be thinking about moving Lamela on this summer – Pochettino can simply no longer rely on his fitness.
