Inter Milan sporting director Piero Ausilio attended Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final between Tottenham Hotspur and Ajax to observe Jan Vertonghen, according to reports in Italy.

Vertonghen was substituted in the 39th minute following a sickening collision with teammate Toby Alderweireld – the aftermath of which you can watch here.

The Belgian received treatment to a gash on his nose and returned to the action, but he was forced to leave the pitch again within seconds and appeared to almost collapse on the sidelines.

Questions will be raised over football current concussion protocol, and hopefully Vertonghen can play against as soon as possible.

Italian outlet Calcio Mercato claims Vertonghen was one of two players Ausilio monitored on Tuesday alongside Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico, a player who has also been linked with Spurs.

Vertonghen is out of contract at the end of next season, and at 32 years of age it is perhaps unlikely Tottenham will offer him an extension.

That said, Spurs could make an exception for a player who has been with the club since since 2012 and still has plenty to offer.
