Manchester United could use Eric Bailly as a makeweight in a deal for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld this summer, according to the Daily Star.

Alderweireld has just over a year remaining on his current contract and is expected to have a £25 million release clause triggered in the coming transfer window.

United were heavily linked with a move for the Belgian last summer but he ended up staying at Spurs, where he has played a key role in the team’s progression to the Champions League final this term.

There is a good chance he will leave this time around, however, and the Star claims Mauricio Pochettino sees Bailly as the ideal replacement.

Bailly has impressed in bursts for United but has struggled with fitness and form issues since his arrival at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils will apparently offer the 25-year-old Ivorian to Tottenham in a swap deal for Alderweireld, a move that is only likely to go through if Spurs value Bailly at around £25 million.

Alderweireld may depart this summer, but surely after his experience in the Champions League this season he will be eager to join another club competing in Europe’s elite competition.
